Viewing Bug #87: XR does not work on Vista
Category Savage Client Posted By Senthryl Last Updated Nov 7, 2008
Assigned to Django Status Closed Priority Very High
Affected Products Not Specified
Description The XR auto updater requires admin permissions to run, but the main Savage binary does not.  Thus, the main Savage binary cannot run the auto updater when UAC is enabled (default) and the game will refuse to load with no error message.  The auto updater is flagged as requiring administrative permissions because the binary name includes the word "update".

XR will NOT run on Vista with the default settings if this problem is not corrected.

The solution:  Rename the autoupdater.exe binary to something without a flagged word (ex. "au.exe").

For the record it works fine for me on Vista... but the first thing I did on my Vista installation was disable UAC Tongue

But for the paranoid few who decide to keep it on, it's quite annoying Sad

Perhaps have the AU check for updates (w/ no admin privileges), then dl it to My Docs and then request admin rights?

Pancake: That's the problem -- the AU won't even run!  Programs do not need administrative rights to write to subdirectories of their own folder (so Savage can write anything to C:\Program Files\Savage without complaint).  The only reason that the executable is flagged as requiring admin privileges (stopping it from being launched by the unprivileged savage.exe) is because it has the word "update" in the name.

Vista automatically marks applications with certain phrases in the name as requiring admin rights in order to be backward compatible with some programs which cannot be discovered through heuristics.

Can't you just re-name the file? Previously, it's worked fine in Vista for me...

Yeah, that's what the original bug report suggest Tongue

You can't really expect people using Vista to have the know-how to rename the file themselves; the onus is on us -- hence this report.

Isn't there a reg key that we can just punch an exception into during installation?
