Its been a while since our last update on the progress of Savage XR and would like to take this opportunity to create a news post to inform you of our progress on Release Candidate 3 (RC3) and our vision of where we want to take XR development in the next few months.

Savage XR RC3
We are only a few weeks away from releasing RC3 and have set ourselves and provisional release date of 15th November (Mohican's birthday!) if all goes well. The main additions that will be present in RC3 are as follows:

o The release of XR Server which will see:
  • Basic VOIP support
  • Server-side Bots
  • Squad Management
  • Optional skill capping (noobs servers)
  • World Physics (dynamic objects)
  • Game Triggers for alternative Game Modes
  • Particle emitters that improve Maps ambience
o A choice of 3 new first person HUDs
o A Tutorial map for the Human Legion

We have also fixed several critical bugs including issues with the auto-updater, the latest graphic card vendor drivers supporting OpenGL 3.0, and the editor crashing regularly. These have been added to RC2 as hot fixes but we will also be releasing new installers for all XR variants for people still experiencing issues with updating.

Further information on new features, content, bug fixes and a full change log will be provided on the release day of RC3.

XR Server Migration

With the aim of providing a smooth transition for admins planning to migrate over to using the XR server we have provided the template configuration file used to set one up here. This should give you an indication of any changes you will have to make to your current SFE configuration.

The Future of XR?

We plan on this being the last Release Candidate of XR before the production version (aka Savage XR v1.0) is made generally available. In this period our main priority will be concentrating on fixing bugs (particularly with the server and editor) and performance related issues to meet your high expectations on stability and the same system requirements and performance as that of SFE. We will also be polishing features and content that we've been working on for some time but are incomplete. These are likely to be:

  • Dynamic shadows
  • Beast Horde tutorial
  • Ragdoll physics for deaths
  • 64bit XR game package
  • Trailer & Tutorial videos integrated in XR
  • Direct conversion of Demos to AVI format
  • Performance improvements to file handling
  • New web service based Stats/Auth server with website clan management

We can't make any guarantees that these will be done in time for v1.0 but hope that most will with the aim of motivating people to utilise XR over older versions of the game.

After the general release of Savage XR v1.0 we plan to organise a community push to advertise Savage XR through social networking and freeware communities, with the aim of increasing the size of our own player base. If you have any other ideas on ways to advertise or what aspects of Savage should and should not be advertised, please feel free to discuss them with us on the comments section of this news post.

Continuing the theme of extending our user base we are in desperate need of Apple Mac and 64bit XR variant maintainers. If your interested in helping out please take a look at our vacancies here.

So what next after the release of XR v1.0? We plan to increase community participation in submitting high quality user created content to be integrated into the game and will be creating an XR map competition, with a prizes, where the best maps will be placed on a dedicated XR server, running only new maps. Finally we will be placing great emphasis on re-evaluating the future direction of development using feedback from the community. Further details of theses initiatives will be made available nearer the time.

Drk's Savage Show Case Video

Last but not least, Drk of the Sun clan has recently created an excellent show case movie of Savage. So while you wait for RC3 check it out and show your mates, we think its wicked sick!

Good job!

Btw: I have high expections concerning the shoutcast video, which may result from the NSL finals with SoV and Sun. A nice opportunity to show the competitive side of Savage to new players.

Nice job. You guys should create a Facebook page to promote the game.

There are already 2 groups but they are pretty dead. An XR one would be good. The HON one has really taken off....even though most of them are beta key requests lol.

@Tirza, has Ben said he would SC? We need a EU SC as well, last NSL they were really entertaining, I'll Ben some beers Cheesy

Good work with the updates on XR, so much <3 for you guys, really appreciated  Afro

60 FPS should be more than enough. By the time XR 1.0 is out, it's gonna be optimized and thanks to RC3, thoroughly tested. IMHO it's counter-productive to judge XR by 2003 graphic performance standards, cuz it's obvious that visual improvements come at a slight cost in system requirements.

I have a good system and I always experienced poor performance in OpenGL games.  Sad Anyway your right 60FPS's more than enough.
