By far this wont be a definitive explanation but it outlines the steps i used to get the game up and running.

1: Download the linux distrubution and place it on your desktop

2 Open terminal and type

cd Desktop

then

Sudo chmod ugo+x  xr_setup-1.ob3-cl_lin_prod.bin

then

./xr_setup-1.0b3-cl_lin_prod.bin

This will begin the game installer and once complete it will auto launch. Have fun and enjoy the game

My personal thanks to #ubuntu for the assitance with the commands

Hi I'm Kay, I am a noob.

I was referred here by Jazzking.
I observed your post and tried to type what I read verbatim in my Terminal and this is what it responded:

/Desktop$ Sudo chmod ugo+x xr_setup-1.0-cl_lin_prod.bin
No command 'Sudo' found, did you mean:
Command 'sudo' from package 'sudo' (main)
Command 'sudo' from package 'sudo-ldap' (universe)
Command 'udo' from package 'udo' (universe)
Sudo: command not found

Any advice?

Don't capitalize the S in sudo. Thanks for your continued efforts to install this game it's worth it!

Hi  Smiley

I am glad to find a person that helps with this Jazzking. You are pretty awesome dude!

The Terminal then responds, 'No such file or directory' when I un-capitalize the Sudo and then continue.

Now I know that there is an 'xr_setup' application in my Downloads folder that is 428.1 Megs big so I'm not sure what to do about that. Maybe try to re download and overwrite the program?

Move the xr_setup file you downloaded to your desktop and try again (that's where the command you typed is looking for the file).

Alternatively, navigate to the downloads folder in your terminal using the cd command. You can seen an instruction for this at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l52Pc3DUZ8

If things still aren't working, try instead to follow the "Ubuntu Games Repository" instructions at http://www.newerth.com/smf/index.php/topic,13970.msg162164.html#msg162164
I'm not sure that that will be the most updated version but Savage should be able to update itself.

Once again I appreciate  your help Jazzking.  Smiley
I have tried placing the file from my Downloads folder to the desktop then using the Terminal commands to install but that did not succeed. As well, I tried re-downloading Savage xr  from the older source that you suggested. At the source I did find that there were a lot of 'file not found' or dead URL redirects.

One thing that I have noticed is that when I choose to Open the file: Wine seems to spawn and then the message:'There is no Windows program configured to open this type of file.' appears in a little Windows-esque box. Is this maybe a clue to the trouble with installing?

I will attempt to update Wine after I post this.

Hi Kay,
I was going to try to install Savage on Ubuntu myself anyway so I'll get a better idea of what's going wrong. I'm on holiday atm though so it might take a week. Could you copy and paste the text in your terminal when you did the first command after moving xr_setup?

No I couldn't. For some reason, as I recall, I did try to highlight some stuff but the text in the terminal was different. I could not highlight. I am not sure what the hot key is for copy/paste in Linux though.
