I was just looking into the wiki to answer a guys question about the differences between the different versions, but didn't find anything.

As espec. the changes/differences between ex2/SEP get mentioned a lot, I think it would be really helpfull if someone could make an article on that.

Here is something I found:

New EX2 baking - Jebus Oct 31st 2004
A testing version of EX2 release 4z is ready. If you’d like to get a preview of what will be in it (ie find the bugs for me), it’s available here.

Please post any bugs you find.

The main changes are:
- Now packaged as a windows installer
- GUI for server administration by Oris
- Sacrifice effect tweaked: hand is on fire during countdown, explosion at the end
- Commanders can draw on the minimap to give orders to their team
- Commanders can choose to disable auto-approve, or set auto-decline for specific players
- Players see highlights on the ground where their commander is about to place a building
- Minimap opacity can be altered
- You can now message players with spaces in their names
- Chase spectators can see the team chat and resources of their target’s team
- Weapon usage stats are recorded
- Servers can now ban players by IP address or GUID for specific periods of time
- Servers can choose to fix the bug that allowed ballistas to fire backwards. Servers can also choose to disable splash damage for siege weapons against units.
- Ref extend command to extend or shorten game time
- More voice chat sounds
- Faster map changes
- Possible FPS improvements, particularly for people with slow CPUs or in crowded scenes

I think this was one of the first releases based on the date.

It was actually the 2nd to last full release, last one being version ex2 5b (which added "water physics", jump/speed pads, healing pools and quite a bit of other stuff I can't remember).

This were basically the (optically) visible differences.

Ex2 has had the problems of tons of exploits that were possible - but were fixed in SEP.

On the other side, Ex2 still is said to have the better melee experience.

Item drop was cool, but still... unbalanced. Think of a Pred with storm shield and a rocket launcher or pulse... :/

Much of the eye candy in Ex2 may be seen in XR - it would at least be the right place to be seen.
CPU-Usage for servers were lower which allowed higher player counts for the same cpu usage - but bandwith usage was much higher than SFE
Ex2 limits to 64 players (the default S2 Savage1 game limit) and got somewhat unplayable in a virtualized environment with more than 56 players (lagz0r)

On the other side:
Server panel ingame was cool - hope to see that in XR too - same with clan server.
Simply join it with your team mates and have a graphical interface to let them join. Once they were in, you could manage them yourself. Quite easy and straight forward stuff...

So yea - as Jebus called it: Ex2 was Savage(1) with balls on. Too bad he didn't put the same energy into bug-/exploit-fixing. - And too bad that WoW carried him away... Undecided

Regards, Bigfoot29
