I've had enough of these free hosts things and decided to make an tutorial for you guys out there. I will use the word: "board" more often than "forum" so if you see "board" just think it is "forum". Got it?
:You will need for that: (depends on what kind of forum though)
Webspace (20+ MB - more is highly recommended) with
The Boardsoftware alias Forumsoftware
FTP client (and the knowledge how to connect to a server + upload files)Boardsoftwares:SMF
(Newerth.com uses this and alot of modifications are available + it's free)WBB Lite
(A good one too and much hacks available + free)phpBB 3
(It's the newest version but not really much modifications + free)phpBB2
(Older version, much modifications + free)WBB 3
(Really good but costs alot of money. Check out the WBB3 Boarddemo
before you buy that)VBulletin
(If you want to buy any boardsoftware I recommence this one. It's really good. But before you buy this check out the vBulletin DemoboardFinding an webhost:
Well this may be the biggest problem because I don't know any english webhosts. Just write an post with the link and I will add it to my list:
(found this maybe check that out)
I will install every forum on my PC and I will use screenshots to show you. (I'll add the other ones later)How-To Install: SMF
Extract the Archive:
Upload it on your webspace:
Connect to your webspace:
Click on the folder you see there (something like smf_1-1-5_install if you didnt changed the foldername)
You should see something like this now:
Write the data into it. Here's my example how it could look like:
If everything goes right you should see that:
If you don't see this you failed that means you wrote something wrong last time. Go back and try again.
If you see that you're good and nearly finished!
Now just write the Username for your own Board and the passwort for yourself. Then write in the MySQL password and go on.
Just check that or delete the install.php file yourself via the FTP software. Then click on the blue writing and - there you go, your own clanforums.How-to Install: Wbb
So, before we can start we have to extract the archive! Then upload all the files to the server: (Or just the "upload" folder)
Then we get to our webserver and open up the file called install.php (should look like this):
Then the License Agreement shows up and we have to read it (hahaha
). Then we give it a mark and go on!
(sorry about the german, it's some kind of autodetect I guess)
Then a message should appear, which says that the install loads some things up. Just wait shouldn't take more than 3 secs!
So it should tell you that everything is okay, else you should look out for another webhost!
Now it should ask where it does install. If you want a tip of mine do it in the main folder (so people don't have to click on the "upload" directory to enter the forum!)
If you click on "next" and get a error message like "Could not create dir" then check if you got the rights to create one! I think chmod 777 is needed (right click on the folder -> attributes and change it to 777 or just put a tick everywhere. Normally you should NOT get that problem, because you got full rights about your "webserver".
(sorry about the german, don't have the english language file
Now when this works, it should look like this:
Just install those things you want to have! As example, I install everything
Now it asks for our MySql information:
The best part imo! Creating the first user alias the Administrator (yes, that's you!
Just write in whatever you want
Now it takes less than 5 minutes to finish the install. Then it asks for another directory. Do NOT use the same, just do a new one then! (Doesn't work if you use the same folder where you installed the forum to)
And again it wants something from us. Tired already? It will soon be over
You do not need the importer or any other things except you're living in the USA or Germany
Yay! The install has finished!
Just click on "Next" now and start adding forums!
~The other one will follow soon~
