Ok so I used to play Savage years ago on the Aus Savage server and loved it, but now with a later computer I want to play again. I downloaded the Savage XR client, installed it. Then at the end of the install when it auto runs, an error came up before the updater could even start that said "this file needs elevation", so i click ok and it exited, so then I clicked the shortcunt to XR on the desktop bus this time the update ran fine, it detected a 70 mb size update, it downloaded that. Then when it came to actually launching the game, the screen goes black like its about to start, but then it comes up with this error:

Click out of that, and nothing. I am running Windows 7 Home 64 bit on an i7 Quadcore cpu, with a Gigabyte Nvidia Gtx 980 graphics card. How do i fix this, cause I really miss Savage. I wanna promote this game, because its awesome and was underrated and i know many people would love it once they see what its like.

You know, the usual Smiley.

Run the program as administrator:
https://www.google.ro/search?q=windows+7+how+to+run+a+program+as+administrator&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=v-TAVOmKFczzULWagdAM

Run the program in compatibility mode:
https://www.google.ro/search?q=windows+7+how+to+run+a+program+as+administrator&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=v-TAVOmKFczzULWagdAM

Read this thread:
http://www.newerth.com/smf/index.php/topic,17386.0.html

Try newer drivers (especially graphic card and mainboard).

Tried the first two already, read the thread and tried their solution and it didnt work (seems that was for a different problem anyway), I have the latest gpu driver, im hesitant to try to change my motherboard drivers in case of any problems. No other ideas?

I can't say I've seen the error you're experiencing, and of course Windows' generic error message of "A problem has occured" isn't all that helpful. It's difficult to fix something with next to no info.
Was a crash dump generated (and offered to you)?
How about the log file found at Savage XR\logs\console.log?
Where did you download the installer from?
Does silverback.exe run?
What's the update's supposed version found in Savage XR\autoupdater\localversion\version.txt?
Savage's first loading screen is pretty much pitch black as well, so is it that screen or a proper fully black screen?

There's the old clichè of downloading it from a different mirror, and installing it anew.
Perhaps even with Admin rights from the get-go.

Silverback does the same thing except without running the updater.

The version file reads "6989"

Black as in the kind of black you see when you run most games before the logos run.

No crash dump came up after.
The log file indicates that Savage was indeed started, but a Windows exe error occured before it was loaded enough for a crash dump.

Heres the log file:
As explained above, the existence of the log file shows that Savage indeed did start, but looking at the log file shows that not everything has been loaded yet. It would seem that it crashed around OpenGL stuff (though the exact timing isn't verifiable).
Implying that it may (=no guarantees) be a driver issue.

Downloaded it from here: http://www.savagexr.com/download.html
The version and log tells me it was probably fine, I'll ask anyway: Which mirror?

The version file reads "6989"
That's fine.

I don't think there's much I can do for you.
Potential causes:
Driver issues.
Installer was faulty.
Autoupdater failed to update properly (either by itself, or in combination with faulty installer).

Potential fixes:
Re-attempting the download and installation. Before updating, though, try out silverback.exe and see if it runs at all.
If it does, try the update thereafter.
If all that fails, updating your drivers (only if there are indeed newer ones available; not older ones) may be an option.

Question - do any other programs or games act unexpectedly or unintended as well?

thought I might add that i've got 16gb ram, and a 250gb SSD harddrive. the gtx 980 has 4gb virtual memory. It wouldnt be that its not registering my available memory because my newer setup has high memory would it?

Could be. And about video card drivers, in most cases, it's not necessarily the newest that's the best, and same goes for XR.

Well this is a damn shame. I'll re-download it soon and try running silverback before it gets a chance to update, otherwise its looking pretty grim Sad

Looks like Tjens and I are also having the same issue with the new 900 cards.  Any luck yet?
