Plan what you want to make.
Use hon editor to sculpt the landscape.
Create a bunch of models, export them with 3dsmax (probably)
Script everything to work as planned
Yey, a map.

Join a mod to get some game making experience.

Everything you listed except for the planning part (obviously) and the model part (and even here I'm not even sure) is impossible. No map editor exists and hosting games is impossible. I posted something on the HoN board some time ago and I'm pretty sure what I said is still applies

Quote
Following is already possible:

    * Create custom UI
    * Replace game resources (models, textures, sounds etc.)
    * Probably some other stuff I forgot

Following will be possible sooner or later:

    * Create custom features or edit existing features (items, heroes, skills etc. It's in fact already possible) to be used in local games and on custom servers (the part which is not possible yet and thus makes the possible part useless)
    * Create custom maps
    * Create custom game modes
    * Probably some other stuff

You can ask me if you have any questions. I can't guarantee an answer though.

A map editor does exists... it just isn't public. The map editor also contains the hero editor apparently.

How exactly do you get it is the question...

Jesse said it was possible to include custom stuff in map files, models scripts etc. And that they were aiming for a larger mods, rather than custom maps.

Wait for more info :O

Local mode will be possible, the server stuff just isn't integrated with the client, yet. A dedicated server should be there, too, once that stuff is in (you can try to start it via command line, but it doesn't have all the server files yet).

You will be able to add models/animations, and you will be able to make complex mods. Tower defense is very doable, according to Jesse, for example. He said the modability of HoN is much better than that of Savage 2, and Savage 2 has some cool mods.

Idejder stated that they wouldn't just release a map editor. They are gonna release a SDK.
