1  Savage XR / Mapping & Modding Forum / Re: old maps need remade on: February 02, 2018, 11:10:35 pm
I would like to comment that the purpose of remade maps should be not solely to make them look better, but also to make them more balanced. There is plenty of maps with shitty balance around, only a few goood maps which are balanced (xr_deja for example).

Yes but this just validates the need to keep the naming different because then you are changing the map in a fundamental way. While it may seem like you are balancing the map (at the time of creation), sometimes only the perspective of time actually proves how balanced a map really is. When you look back at a map you've made after hundreds of plays and it demonstrates a good split in wins between the two races, then you have some sort of empirical validation. Until that point, it really is just assumption.

Better late than never, gj Savagebeard, great guide. I think your command of texturing and colour has improved dramatically from back when I was still active. You should be proud of your achievement.

No disrespect intended but honestly the original avenue_sep looks better than your rework. I would take a plain green textured map over that overstretched repeating canyon texture that you've tiled all over the hills.

This is the problem with remakes/reworks they are usually at best a subjectively slightly better version than the original rather than something that obviously stands as a truly improved upgrade. When you open the flood gates to people replacing originals rather than creating a version of that original, then you are placing all your hopes on the assumption that who ever is remaking the map has a higher level of skill or artistry than the original map creator.

I have certainly done my fair share of remakes, and I will be the first to admit that some of my earlier attempts leave a lot to be desired. But I guess this is all part of the learning curve of a map designer. Remaking maps is a great way to test and challenge your aesthetics. If in the end you truly make something worthy of replacing the original, then you will invariably see people start to adopt your version over the original at any rate as people will call the map they prefer.

Finally, your map also includes changes in the props and I think perhaps the terrain too? In this case, it is most certainly important to then ensure the map is considered an alternative version as this can obviously impact game play, even if those changes seem really small and insignificant to you on the surface, they can have much larger impacts on the balance of the game than may be first obvious.

Edit: I don't want to make it seem like I am shitting on your work btw kLLik. I think you have made some nice changes in your version. I simply think that its important to keep them as different versions.

What do you guys think? Is there any chance that Savage Rez can still be saved?

I think it has about the same chance as a cataclysmic event (like the one that killed the dinosaurs) happening within our lifetime.

It's great to see you haven't lost your fine touch with the analogous comments mate Wink

Best moment...when you jump on _K_'s head to dodge the swing and then secure the kill, hilarious and great tactical ingenuity! Well done.

inside the game ..

Are you pressing the assigned "screenshot" button in savage (not sure what the default is but I always had mine set to F9) or are you just pressing the "print screen" button on your keyboard? The print screen button does not by default capture a screen shot in savage.

Hi everyone, just checking in, I have been super busy with real life (started a new tea bar with my sister) and thus anything relating to online has been put on hiatus. I don't doubt you will all survive without me as basically you already were. Best of luck and happiness for the future everyone.

9  Savage XR / General Savage XR Discussion / Re: Funny Comments from the JP community on: July 25, 2015, 01:25:53 pm
Yeah I think they knew that. All I could gather from Google Translate is that it may have originally been minix, and by a guy named Street or Chopper (?)

I don't know if that belief prevails, if you look at the map minix

You can see that lololol claims the reverse is true, that it is in fact an adaptation of the kinix map. As lololol was from memory a Japanese player that migrated to the EU I think his opinion probably carries weight. The comment is also time stamped back in 2010 when the jp server was still active, and the map was uploaded about a week after I onlined kinix.

Additionally I had a little dig around in both maps and while it is by no means conclusive, minix shows signs of having an amateur make minor terrain modifications rather than building a map from scratch, while in contrast kinix looks like someone has made it from scratch using the height clipping tool or from a height map import. Which is consistent with the assumption that minix was a remake of kinix.

So it turns out that this wasn't a one off. Basically there is an on-going thread (sort of like the video game generals on 4chan) which has been running for over a year about this game within the JP community. Not too active but after I pm'd a japanese player about the Kinixxx author it looks like they discussed it.

Feel free to take a look:

Just to clarify, you should be asking them who made kinix not kinixxx as that is the version I named the map after adding occluders and basic textures/paint.
11  Savage XR / General Savage XR Discussion / Re: Natsu's Challenge - Europe Will be Annihilated on: May 31, 2015, 01:26:57 am
Aneurysm, I would ask you for a video if anyone ever had 40% flux, but let's face it. You're assuming things.

And nobody else has 40% blaze. Lots of people try to counter me with freeswing. It can work. It can fail too. Many elec legos have been burned down trying. I mix up melee and blaze too.

And HELL YES Haika. When the trans-Atlantic internet gets upgraded, and I have 60 ping...Europe will taste the power of Fairy Tail!! 60% blaze. Back to insta-fodderizing legos from inside axe range. Faster more accurate melee. Back to back temp hits. Able to block on T1 reliably again...

I am assuming nothing. Before ex2 died a miserable death the clansavage stats recorded all players accuracy % for all weapons over the lifetime of their account. 40% was the standard benchmark that separated the wheat from the chaff. Many could shoot in the mid 30's but "pros" (and god do I use that word loosely) were able to shoot at 40% + with flux and other spray type weapons. Sharp shooters like coil over 50%. In all honesty, shooting something like tempest where you only have humans to aim at you should be reaching figures of 65% consistently and if you are not, then you are just not doing it right.

The simple fact is, you're not really as special as you imagine yourself to be.

Sorry dude.
12  Savage XR / Mapping & Modding Forum / Re: Super small new map on: May 27, 2015, 11:21:55 am
A far better and more natural looking approach is to just use a 64 x 64 sized map but fill in the edges of the map with rolling hills/high walls to make the actual passable terrain a small 32 x 32 section in the middle of the map. This means that you can do a lot more visually with the edges of your map rather than the standard 300 units high vertical wall that has stretched textures and completely breaks the suspension of disbelief. If you look at a map like xr_unkani it applies this technique.
13  Savage XR / General Savage XR Discussion / Re: Natsu's Challenge - Europe Will be Annihilated on: May 26, 2015, 09:56:24 am
This is why I > you
Your 20% Flux accuracy * 240dps = 48dps
My 40% Blaze accuracy * 450dps = 180dps

Err... anyone who "claims" to be a "pro" while shooting a flux at 20% accuracy should consider a different career path. Honestly if you can't shoot ALL weapons over 40% and sharp shooters at +50% then you really shouldn't be taken seriously. Secondly, any decent human worth a lick of salt will use positioning to hamstring your range, the effectiveness of blazes accuracy tapers off the further you are from the target so I assume that you are probably just using your leap/stamina to close into very close range of the human where you can utilise your blaze to its fullest. That in turn provides a smart human player with two counter options, one is to aggressively freeswing you as you have now closed your range with the player while also using up your stamina and secondly is to use stamina to run/jump themselves out of range to exploit the range weakness already covered.

Of course using immobs is a possibility as Daemon and others have mentioned, but then you are really just opening yourself up to the opposing player switching out ammo for mines and punishing you for forcing a close ranged battle, or if you blah blah blah blah etc etc ....strategy

TL;DR if you are good, you're good, if you are shit you're shit, calling out players or weapons is retarded.
14  Savage XR / General Savage XR Discussion / Re: Savage Growing ? on: May 07, 2015, 11:07:12 am
Sadly there are limits to latency due to the speed of light. But you could probably still halve it with good routing at the beginning (ISP) level, and more cables globally.

Worm hole internet connections - Someone put a patent on that shiz

arent you the person who killed aus.i mean kicking everyone from the server for a week must have hurt aus community.

I'm certain that a bright spark like you Grapist is clever enough to deduce an obvious lie in an attempt to defame. So the question then remains, why perpetuate it? Trying to muddy the waters? Seeking to incite more drama? Please homie, you've got nothing.
Besides, lets be realistic here, even hypothetically speaking if you wanted to entertain the notion, we are talking about something that purportedly happened on a server that died over half a decade ago in a geographical location that is thousands of kilometres/miles from the rest of the world. Hell even the original host of the Savage servers GameArena shut down last year. In short, no one reading these forums cares.

Wasting time is what life is about. We just sit out our given time on this planet and keep ourselves busy till the final curtain falls. How we spent that time won't matter anymore once we're gone. Yet there are certainly some other interesting activities out there than gaming.

I'm jealous of the time that's infront of you Emily. You are young and there's so much planet left for you to explore. Have a nice journey and never forget where you're coming from!

You know sometimes you surprise me Ale, you always act the clown, but every now and then you share an insight that shows you're not just a joker in a pair of floppy shoes  Wink
