I'm anxiously waiting for the port to Kinect. Wink  In the meantime I need to practice my beast leap around the living room.  Afro
32  Off Topic / Chat / Re: Spambot detection thread! on: August 16, 2010, 02:12:50 pm
About 2 weeks ago I wrote a script that actually detects these spambots and allows them to be banned / blanked super quickly.  One of the things that became clear very early, however, is that these bots have been active for a LONG time.  At the last count there are about 7000 bot profiles on the forum that still need to be banned.

Good luck with that!  Cheesy

Lust for dominance
Science for war; peace evades
Which is "beast"?

Brother, you can't see
Nature calls; debt to be paid
You will see

The blind prophet speaks
Kindred fight - Sol is ignored
Hell responds

History faded
A great purge; old becomes new
Don't forget

Behind the giant
A shield master - small, orange
Unsung ace

Summoner, alone
Target distant, mana full...
Poor chiprel  Sad

36  Savage XR / General Savage XR Discussion / Re: Another huge Savage XR poll :) on: July 24, 2010, 04:30:54 pm
I prefer to play with vsync on, so I am always at 60FPS.  For the purposes of this poll, should I vote 60-90, or should I disable vsync to see what the system is capable of?  I ask because the answer depends upon the intentions of the poll author.

I recommend using OpenDNS instead of you ISP's DNS servers to resolve.

As an addendum, if you have some time and tech skills, you might consider using the GRC DNS Benchmark program (direct download link) to scan your network and determine the best public DNS servers for you to use based on your geographic area (OpenDNS is included in this scan).

The program is a mere 154KB in its entirety and doesn't require an install.

If you don't have time or enough interest to read that page, here's the short notes:
  • Download the program
  • Run it
  • Click "Nameservers"
  • Stop using your internet connection (but leave it on) - that means stop downloading your pr0n, playing Savage, playing Savage while downloading your pr0n, etc.  Seriously, it only takes about 5 minutes.
  • Click "Run Benchmark"
  • Sit and watch the pretty bars until the test is done
  • Click on "Conclusions"
  • Read what it tells you to do; it gives you a writeup of instructions based on its findings

For me in Canada, the fastest free public DNS servers turned out to be DNS Resolvers, which was significantly faster than OpenDNS.  Of course your mileage may vary, but at least by running this tool you'll get an insight into what your mileage actually is!  Smiley

Are you on Windows Vista or Windows 7 with UAC enabled?

If so, and Savage doesn't have write permissions to the Program Files directory (happens sometimes), the files might be in the virtual store.  Try checking here:

This folder will look like your root directory (that usually means C:\ in practice) except with very few files.  Navigate to where Savage would be installed from here.  That usually means you'll be looking for:

C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Savage XR\game\demo

. . . or, if you're on a 64-bit operating system:

C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Savage XR\game\demo

I know that this whole virtual store thing left me scratching my head for days about a few mysterious problems related to Savage in the past!  Wink

Your wallpaper is the same image that I use for my log-in screen  Afro

Here's my laptop background.  The wallpaper is a slideshow of 167 images - it changes every half hour - so I picked the least offensive one.  Evil

The voice acting was absolutely hilarious! Grin  Whoever did the narration has an awesome narration voice, though.

Great job!  Afro

Oh... I'll try again then.  Rolleyes

So I've been playing this game called Beat Hazard - it's a little bit neat.  Anybody else played it?  Have you found any songs that work well?

Or maybe even...

Damn I just wasted my money on this terrible game called Beat Hazard.  It's cool for a few hours but then it gets really boring... all the achievements are too easy to get.  It's next to impossible to choose any songs to play, and all of my music collection completely messes up the game.  And no FLAC support?  Come on!   Angry  This is a perfect example of why individual developers shouldn't make games; leave it up to the big game studios who know how to make good products!

Anybody else been bitten by this?

just say it's your game

Huh?  Shocked

What do you get when you cross Asteroids and Audiosurf?  You get Beat Hazard.

Warning: If any game ever deserved the typical "seizure warning" message, this one would be it.  If you're epileptic, you should probably click away now.

I've been playing this game a lot recently.  Basically, it lets you load in your music and generates a space shooter level from it.  You control a ship with the keyboard & mouse or with a 360 controller.  You have to dodge the space junk and enemy ships that try to shoot you down.  What makes the game interesting is that everything that happens is related to the music in some way; your ship grows more powerful as the music gets more intense, enemy ships appear based on what the music is doing, and bosses may appear at extreme moments in the song.

You get all of your regular goodies like achievements, multiple modes, and leaderboards.

The game works best with music containing heavy beats like trance, party, techno, metal, or hard rock.  I have my suspicions that most of the gamers here have no shortage of these types of music.  Wink  However, if you find your music library a little bit thin, the game also comes with a built-in rock album that works very well.

Of course there are some faults such as a poor file browser.  If your music isn't organized into folders, you might have a hard time queuing up songs.  Luckily, this is an indie game where the developer actually listens to complaints and fixes them!

You can check out the main site, or go grab a copy from Steam for 9.99 USD.

I recorded a quick video of me playing to End of All Hope from Nightwish on "insane" difficulty.  If the YouTube video above has left you craving a higher quality gameplay video, click here to download the video [MKV, 159MB].

Not the best but if anyone wants to have some friendly games, <snip>

Sounds like a plan!  I'll be on around 23:30 UTC tonight and frequently during the weekend; I'll see if I can catch up with you.  Smiley

I just got an email that I got in, but I'm at work so I have to wait til I get home.

Awesome!  I just finished my placement matches with a score of 2-3 (I suck!  Tongue) and got placed in the bronze league.  My username in the beta is "Senthryl" and identifier is "devnullious" if anyone wants to have a game, but please go easy! Rolleyes
