Post by: Feathers on March 24, 2012, 10:21:41 pm
new duel comp inc, preparing everything at the moment

Its going to be one with a player limit ~32

basic structure: 4 per group, 8 groups. Top 2 from each group go into the Goldern Cup, Bottom 2 go into the Silver Cup playing for pride (single elimination)

I'll post more later like dates and final structure.

So i want to try something

2 weeks of group stages which will be followed by a single day event on the 20th May 2012, if you can't make it during the hours 17gmt-21gmt, don't bother signing up.

of course it means i can't actually start this yet for 4 weeks so all i can do at the moment is harvest opinions

Closer to the date of signing up i will notify every clan forum of the event.

Here's the current schedule for on going competitions.

SWC                     Duel Comp
week3 1/04/12           N/A
week4 8/04/12           N/A
week5 15/04/12         N/A
week6 22/04/12         N/A
week7 29/04/12         Sign-up
week8 6/05/12          Starts(week1)
week9 13/05/12        (week2)
           20/05/12        Final tourney

Dervun will be taking over as dispute admin

If live streaming is possible(Tirza?), Unsafe has dibs on the commentary box

How many players are you expecting for the preliminary weeks (including how many duels per player) and then in the final tourny?

You crossed out 32 in your first post.

I'm going make the groups even numbered as possible, it will depend on the amount signing up, this will influence the amount of groups as well. The sign up period will be lengthened accordingly. There won't be anymore than 32 in the final tourney.

and from last times feedback, 20 was enough per race, tier 3 as usual

I crossed out most of my first post after reading the feedback from Shagroth and others.

Will you check for cheats like you did last time? :)

I couldn't answer back then; but now I can tell you that if the Duel Comp enforces XR1.0, then anti-cheating will be in place.

will Xr1.0 be bug free by then?

A man-made product will never be bug-free.
What you're asking is if XR1.0 is playable with no major problems; yes it is.
People play on pre-release 1.0 every day; while duels are considerably simpler than normal matches. :p

in a nutshell, in terms of dueling whats the difference between SFE2, RC3 and XR1.0? or isn't there any?

and when is XR1.0 coming out?

Mohi posted a release date which we're pumping more time than usual into achieving.

I don't know the answer to your other question; I don't duel. :p
Anti-cheats is one difference. :)

The hit boxes are slightly different I believe. I only noticed major differences with EX2, which changed melee a ton.
Now get off my lawn!  :-P

There are no changes in the hitboxes. Actually, the chances, if any at all, are not directly made to the melee system, but to other stuff that probably does not influence melee at all, under normal circumstances (like shimmying being eliminated, crosshair flashing when the swing is 'active', speed hack blocked, instaheal/invswitch removed, unique custom melee weapons added).

However, a decision about changing Stalker's hit box may be made this week-end. We don't take these things lightly. If we do change it, the new Stalker will be added to Evolution, and all that stuff will be ready to test in a few days when we release.

It would be good to have servers to test the gameplay where the new siege units are removed from the Evolution mod. They change the gameplay so drastically that I don't see how people would be able to focus on testing the small changes that were actually discussed in the balancing forums.

They actually don't change the game that much. This is not the place for discussing it, but suffice to say they can't replace a good melee unit and they can't replace a good siege unit. They're just meant for breaking deadlocks in draw games. We'll see soon enough, and tweak them as needed.

But all people do on the Evolution server is play with the new siege units. We should test the changes separately, once with the new units and once without (so people can focus on the small changes based on the gameplay everyone is used to).

will the updated servers support SFE2?

if so is Tirza going to update her servers?

and Tirza how much do you know about live streaming? :)

The duels server are currently running XR RC3. Those should grab XR1.0 when that is released!

I'm hoping SFEČ will finally be put to rest.
From my random visits to G&G:
70% use RC3, 25% use 1.0, 2.5% use old (SEP, SFE and older) cheater clients, 2% use RC2 (:?), and 0.5% use SFEČ.

So, XR 1.0-only or don't bother signing up. :)

Won't the server be able to recognise cheating clients on rc3?

People are using rc2 because its better than rc3 and they're probably waiting for xr1.0 or too stubborn to change, mostly likely the latter of the two options. Are you going to leave SFE totally in the dust when x1.0 is finalised?

I certainly know how to do it, I also have enough CPU power and bandwidth. The commentary could be mixed into it via TS/Skype. But Live streaming isn't really worth it. It won't get enough viewers without a community backing it up. VODs over youtube are the better option IMO.

I asked because UnSaFe wanted dibs on the commentary box and was willing to live stream it.

That means UnSaFe knows how to live stream it? The duel comp will be a single event done in around 3 hours, right? Will multiple guys duel at the same time?

Anyways, XSplit (the best game broadcasting software with video cut/overlay features) went recently out of beta and costs now 15$/3 months. Since I don't think streaming the duel event makes much sense without at least 20-30 people watching it and getting it higher in the ranking in order to be accessible to a bigger audience, I would prefer going for VoD's (youtube). Steams with only 1-2 people watching will never be popular, i.e. are not worth the effort.

My suggestion is some person FRAPSing the whole event live plus commentary - which can either be done by the person that records it live or over skype/TS (if the commentary is done over skype it would be best when only 2 players duel at once). Afterwards i'd suggest to add the player names and in the end of each duel the result as video overlay. The whole thing uploaded to Lucky's channel with time links and brackets in the video description.

How's that?
