Title: Quake Live
Post by: HaveFaith on May 17, 2010, 10:46:49 am
A 3D shooter game in the browser and a revival of the good old quake with more community aspects. Worth a peek

http://www.quakelive.com

No high specs computer required, just a small installation and the rest is server based. Have fun!

Back in middle school I would usually alternate between two games, Diablo 2 and Quake 3 Arena. Q3 rules and always has been the definitive death match based arena game. It's fast as shit and takes a lot of skill to be number 1. It's also the source of the now iconic announcer sayings like First Blood and Killing Spree, Dominating ...etc.

Quakelive is essentially a recreation of the game with improved effects, achievements and better matchmaking. It's literally a single plugin download of a minimal size, and then it runs fullscreen in the browser. It's great, try it out.

Those three sentences mentioned by you are from Unreal Tournament... If you want to remind some from Q3A, thou should write "Impressive", "Humiliation" or "Excellent".

And about QL - its just different and have different basis than old mods for Q3 (cpm, cpma or osp)...

Technically they were released 3 days apart so they both deserve credit for it.

Besides quake was better anyway.  8-)

Quake Live just went out of beta. You can still play for free. This is the business model:

http://www.abload.de/img/quake2wfat.jpg

Also the achievement categorisation (Career Milestones, Experience, Mad Skillz etc) is pretty well done. Could be done similar in XR:

Time to bring this thread up again.

You can play QuakeLive also in offline mode against bots which is quite fun actually. Definitely worth a try for those who live on continents where Quake has not much multiplayer activity.

@drk

They film these movies in Wolfcam, not in QL, and there's a command called "r_showtris 1" to show the wireframe.

@drk: either wolfcam/q3mme has an object alpha export function or, what's more likely, they just added a manual mask (prolly pathed) in AfterEffects. :)

Those of you who are fans of id software (makers of quake, doom, wolfenstein, commander keen, rage, hexen etc.) I thought I would point out to you that steam currently has x-mas sales. One of the items on sale at the moment is an id software package, you can buy their complete catalogue for $44.99 USD.

@Tirza, Haha catch a grenade was sweet! I think most of the Teeworlds players use Linux. Atleast I played it on Ubuntu. It may even be one of the default games there... or very easy to find and download from the application library

Realised that this masterpiece wasn't on the thread yet. Music, defragging, editing and effects are all superb.  Made in Quake 3 with CPM physics (air control). All runs are (or have been) world records. It's long but worth to watch to the end

For drk

Professionally done fragmovie... although it's over-edited and has way too many effects for my taste. Fast scene changes and sometimes weird camera angles makes it a bit hard to follow. I thought you drk could use some of the ideas and since the producers are Ukrainian too, maybe you could even contact them for tips.  Still a lot of the tricks are impossible in Savage XR (cos no free camera)

PS. Actually your Extreme fragging movie resembles a lot to this already (like those tilted/shattered screenpanels and target masks). Hope you find something new nevertheless

I know what's the problem. You need to activate the clan to get the tag visible. On "my clans" page there is an "Activate" button next to you clan rank. Press that and voila

One of the best comebacks, Toxjc vs Av3k, starting at around 10 mins. Toxjc was Quake 4 world champion, didn't manage to repeat his success in Quake Live though, except in TDM.

I actually played one of my first duels against this guy when I started to play Quake Live 2 years ago - on the same map, ZTN. It was a massacre, however I didn't loose to zero, I managed to kill him once with my rail. He chases you down so fast, they call him the Terminator.  :-D

I have no idea why people don't loose interest to Quake live? Its plain boring, repetive alot, shoot+die+spawn=BORED
And i have no idea why FPS genre is so popular? That genre is quite shallow, just shoot and nothing else, no depth.
Sometimes i think that FPS genre is no skill: win those players who first encounter and shoot.
I personally dont like fps games at all, no originality, camping is impossible to avoid, other games like doom or HalfLife mods is all about shooting slow zombies, who have no chances to beat players.
Btw those who call quake a hardcore shooter is wrong, quake is arcade shooter.

Perhaps best shooter in my opinion is
https://account.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/?referral=1148635&utm_campaign=email
Atleast its more depth crafted, and additional skiing with jetpack who give players more freedom.

Any other shooter in the market makes me sad.Lol at call of duty and battlefield.Place where camping synergy united.

Tribes Ascend isn't more in depth than Quake

It's an accessibility problem: depth that isn't pre-rationalized by the game tends to be overlooked.

If a game designer wants to attract the 95% of the gamers that consider themselfs as smart - and therefore won't play "dumb" games - then they have to consider these 2 rules of perception/accessibility:

1. What doesn't have name or number doesn't exist.
2. The whole is the sum of its parts.

Title: Re: Quake Live
Post by: Nanaa on July 12, 2012, 06:55:40 pm
Quake Live has a lot of depth. It requires skill. It's a hardcore shooter.

Newbies won't see the depth unless they become regular players. Before that it may seem like a "no-brain" shooter. Luckily, you can take the shortcut though and check how the pros play and hear their analyses on competitive matches.
Watch this for example:

Most games that are considered to be complex provide quantitative freedom only for the most part.

Quake provides qualitative freedom on the highest level.

It does that by reducing character skill down to what is strictly necessary for a FPS to work: movement speed, health und unit weight. Maximal control to the players. Secondly, all gameplay elements (weapons, ammo, items, health, armor, powerups) are part of the environment, opened to competition, making the gameplay very tactical and thrilling - especially since these elements have all respawn times. Thirdly, the movement system is very sophisticated and entirely player skill based (given the base speed). The map design is complex, good knowledge/prediction and movement is key.

Let's compare that to Tribes or most other action games:

Most games are class based (the worst case) or allow you to get the weapons/items in a safe place, or they have an economic system guarating you access to everything through money without additional (positional/timing etc) requirements, making the tactics less dynamic and challening. There's also a lot of character skill that can be used by the push of a single button, while the maps have one/two obvious ways, are empty and only used to approach the enemy/objectives and to gain positional advantage in fights. The movement system in almost all games is terrible, usually it's just the minimal base speed (accessible by ASDW) and sometimes some character skill abilities. Additionally there's regenerating health, gameplay based on random chances and other crap.

Quake releases the player from character skill and relocates the tactical elements from the inside to the outside: the map. It's a double win of qualitative freedom, while standard games have a double loss here. If those games were human, psychologists would call them very neurotic and requiring treatment: Restricting the players potential with character skill from the inside, and restricting potential from the outside with emptyness.

I hope you get my point.

Quake 3 / QL was is and will stay #1 fps game. As it was said before - only your skill level (aim, reaction, quick decisions, territory control, enemy movement prediction, your movement - strafe etc.) rules here. Not money, donations, better weapons, some ingame leves etc etc... In any second of game all are equal here. If you are losing vs somebody the only one you can blame is yourself.

The added a premium/free map rotation that changes each month. Last month for instance they removed ctn from the free users duel map pool (the most popular duel map), which pretty much killed the scene.

Yes.
But earn money from eSports is easiest way. It's way better, unlike typical people who working monotonous job 9hours per day and 5/7d week.
Not to mention its about fame, lets image:
1.Fatal1ty
2.Rapha.
3.TIRZA
What a name, I actually want my name were Tirza. Because my name is Tom, and I dont like it, cos it is TOO mainstream.

1. You really think Tirza's her real name?
2. You really think eSports or however that crap is called is easy?
3. You really think every job/work is monotonous and boring?

Games should be played for fun (and competition if you like it) and not for money.

Nice Nanaa, I'm using pretty much the same config:

That was drki. drk plays Quake Live as "_DarkSide" http://www.quakelive.com/#!profile/statistics/_DarkSide (http://www.quakelive.com/#!profile/statistics/_DarkSide)
The video was exclusively about TDM. drk is into Clan Arena though.

TDM used to be my favourite mode along with Freeze Tag and CTF. However, nobody plays it anymore these days. http://www.quakelive.com/#!profile/statistics/HurlyBurly3027 (http://www.quakelive.com/#!profile/statistics/HurlyBurly3027)

What a duel, thanks tirza.

Spoiler (Mouse-Over to read)
Interesting to read that Cypher specializes in combat rather than item control, it's amazing that it seems to work for him so well, and to see his combat be seemingly on another level compared to his opponent. In every endeavor it feels like raw skill is the exclusive domain of prodigous youth (chess, sav, dota, starcraft, quake, math, music, languages ...).

@jazzking:

Cypher is good at both, but his excellent combat skills make him a strong player when being out of control. He manages to do amazing comebacks.

Daemon is mainly a pwnz0r. He hasn't won a single tournament, but is always to top 4-8.

Same goes for Toxjc, which was unbeaten in Quake 4, however Quake 4 is a less tactical game (a bit like Quake 3 CPM). Toxjc is one the the best aimers along with Cypher, if not the best. This year he stepped up his item control a lot, was less rushing into situations too and beat the multiple world champion rapha 3:1 in the quarter finals. Rapha is known for his superior tactical gameplay. Shane Hendrixson vs Johan Quick was the most surprising performance of the whole tournament:

Leaked changes for Quake Live before it goes to steam:

Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/QuakeLive/comments/2cxrjh/new_ql_wip_patch_notes_next_step_on_destroying/

The next update will include a large number of gameplay changes, all of which are slated to be released prior to our Steam release. The vast majority of changes are being encapsulated within the new default ruleset, while the legacy style of play will remain available in a "classic" ruleset available via Create Match.

The goal of this release is to bring the game up to shape and slightly modernize some aspects to make the game more accessible, friendly, and enjoyable to new comers.

New Default Gameplay Ruleset

Players may now hold jump to continuously jump.
The minimum allowed time between jumps has been increased from 50ms to 100ms.
Players may now hold forward and jump to 'bunny hop', allowing them to slowly gain up to 2x their base movement speed.
When wielding the Gauntlet, ground movement speed is increased 6.25%.
Introduced Loadouts, allowing players to select one Primary Weapon (hmg, rl, lg, rg) and one Secondary Weapon (mg, sg, gl, pg).
Added the command "weapon toggle" to toggle between your Primary and Secondary weapons.
Unified weapon respawn time to 5 seconds across all gamemodes.
Added global Ammo Packs, in lieu of weapon specific ammo, where each pack grants you a small amount of ammo for each weapon in your inventory.
Reduced ammo respawn time from 40 seconds to 10 seconds.
Added in-world item timers for "major" items, including armors, megahealth, power-ups, and medkit. Respawn timers blink once per second, and display one "pie piece" for every 5 seconds that has elapsed.
Items have taller pickup collision boxes, so that players will not miss items as they jump over them.
Power-up spawn indicators now appear when a power-up has spawned in the arena.
Enabled self-kills with an additional 1 second respawn penalty.
    Railgun damage 80->90
    Rocket splash damage 84->100
    Gauntlet damage 50->75

Weapon Changes

Added new weapon, the Heavy Machinegun to act as a viable primary infinite range hitscan weapon with some but minor spread.
Lightning Gun now does 6 damage per cell across all rulesets, or 120 damage per second.

Public FFA Settings

    New ruleset in full effect

Public Duel Settings

    New ruleset in full effect

New ruleset enabled without loadouts (new physics, but 'all' weapons - classic ca + hmg)
    Round Limit 7
    Teamsize 5 (no callvoting teamsize).

Public CTF Settings

New ruleset enabled without loadouts (new physics, mg starter, in-world item timers, etc)
    Timelimit 15
    Teamsize 5 (no callvoting teamsize).

    Timelimit 15
    Teamsize 5 (no callvoting teamsize).

General Game Changes

Fixed the CHEATS ENABLED notification on the map loading screen from lagging behind its proper state.
Reduced the default amount of player movement bobbing.
Reduced the default amount of damage kick movement.
By default, don't show weapons you don't have in inventory on your weaponbar.
By default, bob major items when simpleitems are enabled.
Prevent broken shader image on crosshair '30', '60', '90', which would equate to crosshair "none" as the cycle repeats.
Bots now randomly select loadouts, when applicable.
Greatly reduced multiple pickups prediction errors.
Removed the option to move to FreeCam while dead in elimination based gametypes.

Create Match Features

Now support custom values of starting ammo in AD, CA, DOM, and RR.
Added optional Double Jump physics player movement mechanic.* (*Not yet actually on Create Match UI.)

The long awaited update that stirred up a lot of heated arguments is finally here, this is one of the first steps towards the transition that will prepare ql Quake Live for the official steam Steam release. The developers included a heartfelt message along with the changelog, instead of the stale config variable and map fixes, this time the impactful changes won't leave anyone unaffected. The mellow message from the developers shines light on a new perspective that you either love or hate. Is this a new beginning or the everlasting end? You decide.

Message from the original developers

Last month at QuakeCon we announced that Quake Live would be coming to Steam and with that expansion take on some new gameplay changes and features. At that time, we did not have many specifics to share as we were poised to keep an open mind as to what our future would look like, and wanted to see how we could introduce a wider audience to the game we so dearly love. Quake is a masterful game of skill, often compared to Chess by its veteran players. However, with that depth has come a challenge to welcome and capture new players long enough for them to discover the joy to be found in what many consider the finest Deathmatch game ever made.

For some of us that joy is simply nostalgia of our early days, an introduction to online FPS that ushered in a new era of gaming. For many it is a love of mastery, striving to become better in a competitive world that seems to have no upper bounds. It is a game of limitless growth where the movement, strategy, and perfection of aim seem to be an extension of our human selves where hard work, dedication, and confidence can translate into a measurable improvement that brings a great pride to our players. While Quake will always be a home to the competitive base, we have often longed for a wider audience who could experience, appreciate, and fall in love with all that it has to offer.

For new players, it has been quite clear what the greatest barriers are: effectiveness on spawn, movement, and item control. These elements on several levels also make our game great, so we wanted to inspect what could be done to make the game a more enjoyable experience, all while teaching players a bit of the meta-game depth.
We tested several ideas including granting players better starting weapons and compared that to the lessons learned in Clan Arena where players get to try out various weapons and see their effectiveness each round. We found that providing the player one single "primary" weapon of their choice in addition to letting them have a bit more freedom as to which "secondary" they spawn with allows players to try out various weapons and become more effective on spawn which has been the key complaint of newcomers. Meanwhile we still want to highly encourage picking up weapons throughout the arena, so we have minimized the amount of ammo granted on spawn so that players will continue to roam and gather both weapons and ammo. Allowing the new behavior of choosing some starting weapons greatly improved the experience in modes such as FFA and TDM and helped make some of the more chaotic modes like Domination quite enjoyable. Hence, Domination will now be ran publicly for all to play.

Additionally we wanted to find a way to teach players a few core bits of information concerning item timing. We have introduced item timers, present transparently in the world (not on your HUD), that all relay item respawn information under the following design guidelines: Each item timer has a radial display divided into slices. Elapsed time is drawn as solid slices. Each slice represents 5 seconds. Active regions are represented by blinking slices that blink once per second. The timers should adequately teach players when an item is about to respawn or when it is better to move along even without this knowledge. And as players continue to play, they will begin to understand exactly how much time elapses per slice and can begin utilizing the timer indicator in coordination with their match timer to know when items will become available. To both minimize visual noise that the timers could incur and to prevent an unnecessary flood of information throughout the world, item timers are only visible while in close proximity, gently fading in as you approach.

The final hurdle for new players to overcome was strafe jumping. We wanted to preserve strafe jumping as is, as both its intentional use and its subtle influences as you traverse the map are what make Quake feel incredibly smooth and responsive. For many of us, learning strafe jumping came naturally or for long time players was simply the foundation of our FPS experience. But we wanted to assist players and provide them with a simpler means of movement to allow them to keep up the pace as they overtime learn to more fully benefit from strafing. A basic "bunny" and auto-hop mechanic has been introduced that allows players to simple hold forward and jump to build up some speed. However, because the new bunnyjumping only provides a limited amount of accel gain, and is only effective on straightaways, players will still need to learn strafe jumping over time we hope that this new mechanic will allow both general movement and gameplay to become more accessible encouraging them to continue to play so that they may over time become more accustom to the finer side of Quake.

But ultimately these changes have not been introduced for the new player alone. We feel that these elements overall help bring Quake one step closer to being a modern shooter, while still holding true to our roots of remaining an incredibly fast paced old school shooter. We've had a lot of fun with these new additions, and hope that you learn to appreciate them.

For players who have taken great pride in becoming skilled in our more challenging areas such as competitive Duel, we hope that running our FFA and Teamplay servers with these new, fun, and accessible mechanics that we can begin to build a larger base of players who could then try their luck at the Classic Duel experience. Here players will have to shed their new skin and play under slightly more challenging conditions, but ones that we know have proven themselves true in the e-sports arena.

Sincerely,
The Quake Live Team

New Quake Live Ruleset

- Players may now hold jump to continuously jump.
- Players may now hold forward and jump to 'bunny hop', allowing them to slowly gain up to 2x their base movement speed.
Introduced Loadouts in select modes; allowing players to select one Primary Weapon (hmg, rl, lg, rg) and one Secondary Weapon (sg, gl, pg, mg).
- Added the command "weapon toggle" to toggle between your Primary and Secondary weapons. Defaults to "f" for new users.
Unified weapon respawn time to 5 seconds across all game modes.

- Added Power-up Spawn POIs, that appear 10 seconds before a power-up spawns.
- Added Power-up POIs, that indicate when an available power-up is available in the arena.

For players who wish to largely avoid the new major changes, the legacy style of play has been preserved within a "Classic" ruleset. All of our public Duel servers run in Classic mode. Subscribers may host additional classic servers using our "Create Match" feature. This includes the launching of Standard Classic servers, which any player may freely join.

The interesting thing is that the Lightening Gun in original Quake from 1999 dealt 8 damage per cell, in Quake Live from 2009 it dealt 7 damage and now in Quake Live 2.0 from 2014 it deals 6 damage.

According to id Software, reason for that continous nerfing are better internet connections, higher hz screens, higher in game FPS and better mice that people are using today.

Since Lightening Gun in Quake is the equivalent to Flux in Savage, it would be interesting to compare a 2003 Flux to a 2014 Flux. I'm sure it's a lot more powerful today than it used to be for the same reasons.

On average my flux accuracy has been 31% in normal gameplay (not trying maximize accuracy except on low ammo).

125 fps and beyond causes me random mouse freezes

The gameplay changes made me play different game modes than before:

Before TDM out of control was all about running around with machine gun and gauntlet while getting killed by someone with powerups and all weapons. I personally liked it, but I can understand that most didn't. The addition of loadouts in TDM made that dead game mode popular again. It's still fun!

Freeze Tag got worse. I really liked when you could keep your weapons over multiple rounds and getting rewarded for staying alive. Now it's like a clan arena with freezing. It's still moderately fun though.

Domination was an objective based clan arena with regenerating health before. Now the amount of weapons you start with has been reduced to 2, though with more ammo, which is okay. I like it: less spam.

Clan Arena got worse. I always hated the rocket and granade spam everywhere, also from team mates shooting in your back and messing up your aim. Now that LG got weaker the rocket spam is even more annoying.

CTF remained unchanged (except LG), but usually there's only one server with 10 specs, so you never have the opportunity to play anyway because teams are always full. CTF is dead for me, although it used to be one of my favourite game modes.

Duel remained unchanged (except LG), but I only play team games.

FFA is now very different with loadouts, but I don't mind since I never play it. I prefer team games.

TDM, Domination and Freeze Tag ftw!

Wish old Insta CTF could be back alive again. But no.
Since they turned off map votes in public servers - it became dead :(

Tried the Steam version today and...uhm...I couldn't even join a deathmatch game? This thing with server for only subscribers is just crap because then there will only be some few server and if you can't join you get put in spec. And before you tell me to play the team modes, when I play a lot of Savage that is so insanely team based, sometimes I just want to blow everyone up instead without thinking about any team.

Had a lot better experience with OpenArena which is freeware and open source. Sauerbraten is also a good one.

A dead multiplayer game is a bad multiplayer game:
http://steamcharts.com/app/282440

over 3000 players in QL at once means lots of fun and a great variety of maps and modes

That's the problem though. I couldn't even join the mode I wanted to play even with these numbers. Those games I mentioned are as dead as Savage is.

This looks harder than savage imo, worth trying out? Would a veteran savage player be good at this?  looks a lot quicker paced.

Ofc you can be good there. But to be good there you need such as
- good aim (since it is much quicker you need to aim and shoot much faster than in savage)
- learn how to strafe there
- map knowledge / item placement (if you will play mods where you need to pick up weapons and armor)
- 'how to' use rocket jumps (if you will play in mods like ClanArena - it has no self and team dmg).

My personal opinion is:
1. InstaCTF - awesome mod for a teamplay + self aim train. You dont spent your time in searching for weapons because all the time when you spawn you get a railgun. This mod is 1 shot - 1 kill (insta). I remember when there were full servers all the time with this mod. Nearly all server are empty now. All because of that they locked map change in the past. :(

2. Since InstaCTF rip atm I'm playing only in CA (clan arena) mod. Mod with 2 teams. No team dmg, no self dmg. No spending time in searching for weapons/armor. Since self dmg is off - you can rocket jump and that makes game much more faster and more interesting to play (more harder but more interesting.)
CA is feeling fine atm. Servers are always full. Its ez to find a server that is about to start a game. You don't spend your time in the warmup for ages. Etc. Ofc you can get some noobs in your team an so on.

+ I still think that quake 3 arena (rip) = quake live (this) is still the best online shooter that was ever made. Because it needs a real skill :)
If you need good graphics - get cod or bf or w/e :D

If you love FPS games, Quake Live offers the best possible experience. Haven't played anything else that I enjoyed so much.
As for single player, try Painkiller Black Edition (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsj0oXzjaVk) (me playing), RAGE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjEryt1RCXw) (me playing) or Wolfenstein The New Order (http://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/288570/), though Steam Winter Sales are over now  :-P

As an alternative, I could recommend Cube2: Sauerbraten (http://sauerbraten.org/). Also multiplayer and It's open source. Imho very funny and not to difficult (to me at least).

Yeah, but I think she's not living there. Although her map knowledge was vastly superior and she collected most of the items, at least my aim was significantly better than hers (52% vs 36%), which gives a bit of solace

Damn, she got almost twice my ELO

That sounds like a big difference! Keep in mind skill difference is better defined by ELO difference than ELO proportion. Any two players with the same ELO difference have the same W/L probability against eachother, but that's not true of any two players where one has 2x the ELO of the other.

Nice drk, World Rank: #2053 in CA!

My FFA rating is 2275 but I'm only in top 9000 though. Seems like FFA got a lot more players.
