S2 Map Making Guide
From Newerth: Savage Wiki
|
Besides the actual game play, Savage 2 comes with an editor to allow you to create and edit maps with ease. You can control all aspects of the terrain and add/remove objects from the map. There is also a large selection of textures for you to use on your map. By the time you are done with this tutorial, you will be familiar with creating and editing maps, but not necessarily a professional at making maps.
[edit] Starting Your Map
To begin, simply open up the editor by clicking the "Editor.bat" file. There, you will see a blank plane with black and white squares. This means that there are not any textures. Next, you will learn how to add textures. To save this map, press Ctrl+F8 and type save mymap. The game will pause for a second. Then press Ctrl+F8 again, and you are good to go. This saved your map so you can edit it later.
[edit] Adding Textures
The first thing in the editor that you want to do is add textures. Nobody is going to play a map with black, white, and grey squares set as the texture! Secondly, adding textures makes your map easier to work with. How to add textures (Refer to image to the right):
- From the Dropdown Menu, select Textures
- Select the button that has Textures pointing to it.
- Change the Brush Size to the largest size
- In the Texture Selection, browse all of the textures in the list. You can see what you have selected in the Texture Preview window.
- After you have selected the Texutre and Brush Size you want, then drag your mouse over the whole map.
Note: I recommend using a grass texture to begin with
Advanced textures will be discussed later.
[edit] Deforming Landscape
Deforming landscape is the biggest part of what makes a map fun, or what makes it bad. Deforming landscape changes how tall a piece of land. You can add hills, walls, etc. It is what gives a map its shape. This is perhaps one of the most important parts of map making.
[edit] Raising/Lowering Terran
In the dropdown menu, select Deform. If you do not know where the dropdown menu is, then look at the Textures section.
