[edit] Possible Human Tactics

Crossroads contains many paths and back doors for each base. The only limit point is the center of the map, where all of these paths converge at a mine. If a team can effectively claim the middle and defend it, they can protect their entire side of the map. Be careful though. Some skilled players might be able to sneak past any defense you could possible build and make a sub/gar behind your defenses. Gates are allways a big risk too.

  • The first thing to do in crossroads is to build a garrison right beside the mine in your base and powermine it. The mine is so far away from the base that not building a garrison means very slow stone intake and, therefore, very slow tech researching (no weapons). While most of the team is building this garrison and mining, one player will need to capture the spawn flag closest to your stronghold (usually an officer). Once the flag is claimed, your team should immediately enter the garrison where they are mining and spawn at the flag.

In short: match starts, whole team, except one or two flag runners, gar and powermine at the mine in front of the stronghold. Once the flagrunner takes the flag team spawns there except a very small number of powerminers. After that, some variation is possible but the start is allways like this.

  • From here there are several common strategies, most equally effective. Alot depends on what the enemy team does. First, and most frequently used, is a straight charge for the enemy's spawn flag. If you can claim this flag, they will be forced to spawn at or near their stronghold. However, holding the other team's spawn flag is very difficult as there are many paths leading to it and hills nearby that a player can jump off. This is what beast often does with the human team. For humans, this tactic nearly allways fails, except when stacked.

  • A second strategy is to quickly build a garrison at the center mine, allowing you to not only claim the resources from the mine, but also build towers and block enemy players from entering your side of the map. Once a garrison is built, you should try to claim the enemy spawn flag, kill any sublairs, and then destroy their base. Unfortunatly, since beast are faster, they usually have a sublair at mid first.

  • A third strategy is to quickly gar at the flag and tower it up a bit so the beast cant take the flag. Key to this tactic is to get a shield up at the flag before they can sac/blaze/melee/.. the towers. Which is not easy.

  • A fourth strategy is to quickly gar the blueish snow uphill. Such a gar can be very hard for beast to kill and humans can recover their flag pretty easily if it's lost. Dont forget to also defend the back of the garrison, beast prefers to attack it from behind instead of crawling up the hill while eating bullets. The enemy can easily go around if they have the flag.

  • A fifth strategy is doing any of the above while one or two people sneak through mid, ignoring the flag or any mid subs the enemy has. You can sneak gar at their oschore pit, back door and allthough risky, between their second mine and their base (behind the tree, out of sight). Siege rush. If you see someone on the minimap near the enemy base building a gar and your com is yelling 'prepare for siege rush' or simular stuff, save up gold. If needed and possible, neglect the mid defense/offense and help build the siege workshop or other tech needed. Balli's should be rolling out of the gar as soon as it's build. If this tactic works, humans can win very quickly. However, this is not easily done. It's easier if beast has a mid sub, that way they usually dont spawn at flag anymore. Since it is rarely done, beast doesnt expect it. Their scouting-for-sneak-gars is usually very poor/non-existant.

  • IMPORTANT: Keep an eye your backdoor and other sneaksub/gate locations. The back door is the path from your stronghold that does not contain a mine or a spawn flag. Many crossroads games have been won by an effective back door attack. Humans should always place several well-hidden sensors in their back door and check it occasionally for gateways. Other hotspots are: the oschore pit (between flag and base), behind the tower between the base and the second redstone mine and on the path between the base and the second redstone mine. Scouting is very important. Keep an eye open. If there is a sudden drop in beast activity, they might be all in their base waiting to beherush once the gat/sub is complete. Or they might have a dance-dance competetion with monkits, but it's safer to check for gates and subs anyway.

  • IMPORTANT: Gar the second redstone mine as well. Not imediatly, but dont wait too long with it either. If mid is lost, the gar at the second mine should be up and shielded already.

  • If your team is losing, a back door strike may be the key to a last minute siege rush. To pull this off, ignore the spawn flags, avoid enemy players, and try to make it to the enemy's back door undetected. Build a garrison around the corner so that they can't see you. Then spawn tons of siege weapons and hit the lair only. This strike can bring down an enemy stronghold/lair in seconds. Humans can hold their base pretty long, if done well. During this relativly long time of defending, a few people should allways be advancing, either trying to sneakgar or demorunning stuff. You cant win a game if your whole team only defends. Dont get any idea's, you need a strong defense too. If the base falls, all the work put into the sneaking was all in vain.

  • You dont have to wait till your team is losing for sneak garring. If you have the opportunity to do it, if you somehow can get past the enemy frontline unnoticed and your team has stone and gold, gar. Ask your com to gar. The com does not allways make sneak gar. Sometimes he needs to spend the redstone on other important stuff such as rebuilding a shield tower.

[edit] Possible Beast Tactics

The start is the same. Whole team, expect one-two flag runners, subs and powermines at base. Once the flag is taken (you should/could have poison by then) spawn flag(all).

Then beast usually subs mid, adds a few spires to keep sneakers away and to protect the sub. Mine mid when you spawn, deliver the stone when you respawn. Search and destroy. Take out their gar, if they have one near mid. Take their flag. Beast usually goes fire/strata.

Beast generally claims mid. If claiming mid fails, the common strategy is to sub both paths leading from mid to the beast part of the map. The backdoor path is usually secured with one or two sublairs on the hill near the mid. The flag path is usually secured by either a sub between flag and mid (just behind the corner) or a sub behind the trees near the flag. Subbing the blueish snow is a possibility too.
