I like lits of books Wink

The House of Leaves is great imo, DWF's Infinite Jest too.
I mostly read German books or translated books tho. Try Kafka, Dürrenmatt and Brecht if you can read German or if you can get your hands on a translation Wink
The swarm by Frank Schätzing is also quite good. And there are tons of good and bad Fantasy books out there!

The Droll Stories of Honoré de Balzac (and nearly everything else from him), Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes or Simplicius Simplicissimus from HJC v. Grimmelshausen. The last one is one of the greatest books I've ever read, still I don't know how well translations work out. It's written in antique german (1668) and you have to find a version done by a careful publisher in german already to be able to dive into it.
Fazit: go with the classics. Doesn't matter if it's Frankenstein, Robinson Crusoe or Gulliver's Travels - If you know the name and the story somehow, but never read the book, its time to do it - they're great. School teachers kill a lot of good stories by forcing people to read them.

Bohumil Hrabal is a great writer too, he's Czech and to read him in original language would alone justify the learning of the czech language. Have been told that I can learn czech until I die to fully understand his humor and feeling for language, though.
Chinghiz Aitmatov should be mentioned here as well, along with Juri Rytchëu.
Other writers I'd recommend are Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Robbins and Douglas Adams.

if you want some easy but very well written historically correct novels:

Bernard Cornwell: The Saxon Stories. I enjoyed this serie very much. Vikings and brits! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saxon_Stories

Conn Iggulden: Conqueror series. This one is about Genghis khan and Mongols http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_of_the_Plains

Also Finnish Mika Waltari has written many enjoyable historic novels such as The Egyptian.

Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes
I've not read Don Quijote, but i've seen a movie about the book. Very interesting. The rest of the books you mentioned, have I not heard about . I'm from norway and still in high school, so most of the older authors/books from outside of Norway is unknown to me.

I've read the cornwell series, great books, loved'em ! Conn Igulden is also great, but I've read the Roman series he've written about the roman Empire. I'd look into the Ghengis Khan & mongols series aswell now! Smiley
The finnish author have I never heard of, but i'll check him out!

Yeah, was wondering if there was anyone else who had read that book here! The book was a major "gamechanger" for me. Though, i'm still a newbie when it comes to girls, but practice makes master!  tongue
