At last the login screen appears! You're great! Thanks for your help! I am now dumped into another issue though, which doesn't quite belong to this topic...

I have STC support
Code:
glxinfo | grep -i s3
    GL_NV_texgen_reflection, GL_NV_texture_env_combine4, GL_S3_s3tc,
    GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc, GL_EXT_texture_env_combine,

However i'm still getting the white screen at startup.... I'm running on Fedora 17 x86_64

Putting in the space only comes up empty, as in it doesn't supply output it just brings up a new entry line.

That means that the S3TC extension is indeed missing. You need to follow the rest of the steps in the OP to solve the issue.

whats the OP?

Ok this is where I've gotten to in the instructions.

sudo apt-get -b install gcc libgl1-mesa-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gcc is already the newest version.
libgl1-mesa-dev is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-image-3.8.0-23-generic linux-image-3.8.0-28-generic
  linux-image-extra-3.8.0-23-generic linux-image-extra-3.8.0-28-generic
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

after downloading the s2tc package from my package manager I managed to get this.

glxinfo | grep -i s3
    GL_NV_texgen_reflection, GL_NV_texture_env_combine4, GL_S3_s3tc,
    GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc, GL_EXT_texture_env_combine,

however I still get the white screen effect.

Ok so I figured out how to fix the white screen. Because I was using an LXDE desktop which prevents me from using shaders or any graphical options at all it wouldn't function on that, however swapping to a KDE plasma desktop now lets me see the login screen.

I'm using my username and my password but it's not logging in, did I do something wrong?

I've having the same problem with on a ubuntu 12.04 LTS box.
I checked all the info commands on the OP and they seem OK now.
However, I still get the white screen.
When I try to log what happens I just get a 'system_init()' in the log.

The music runs on the background, I can hear the savage click sounds and the build info on the bottom right corner is visible with a fading effect. But after that a blank screen is what remains.

Can anyone walk me through this?
