Title: Savage: XR 1.0 RC3 Released!
Post by: Django on December 25, 2009, 06:49:59 am
Newerth.com Development Team (http://www.newerth.com/?id=about), of over 30 people, is pleased to announce the 3rd Release Candidate (RC3) of Savage XR (http://www.newerth.com/?id=xr) Version 1.0, the next generation content patch for the popular RTSS, Savage: The Battle for Newerth (aka Savage 1). Happy holidays to all!

(http://www.newerth.com/img/xr_release/SavageXR_RC3_released.png) (http://www.newerth.com/?id=downloads&op=displayDownloads&category=1)

After much testing and stability profiling, we are finally releasing the XR server files! Polls have shown that XR is now at least as stable as SFE. As server admins start switching to XR, players will be able to start enjoying maps made especially for XR!

Overview of the XR server features
- Supports new XR props (Aztec theme, Arabic theme...)
- Supports XR physics objects (boulders, crates...).
- Supports triggers & special effects emitters.
- New NPCs (shrull, crawler, ronin, macaque, panda)
- New Bots system.
- New private vote type, visible only to own team (/callvote msgcomm)
- New Skill capping system (optional).
- New Veteran Nerfing system (optional).
- Integrated Mods: Samurai Wars, Extreme, Ex2.

Bots in Savage!
Server admins can now include bots on their servers. The bots are still experimental, but they promise to be useful on servers with few players (2-4). They can be made to automatically replace players when there are less than a given number in each team. Below is a video showing what 32v32 bots looks like!

or

Ex2 integrated into XR
The Ex2 mod is being rescripted & recoded into XR. Unique Ex2 features include:
- Ability to drop weapons/items on the ground.
- Up hill Leaping with beasts.
Ex2 style melee has not been reproduced yet, but we hope to work on that between now and the next release.
We have setup a server where you can play Ex2 24/7 (Ex2 Revival Server (http://www.newerth.com/?id=serverlist&details=83.142.226.16:11444)).

Client Improvements
- New: Tutorials
We have created the first tutorial map, in a planned series of between 6 and 8 in total.
You will notice the new tutorial button in the main menu.
- New FPS player HUD.
- New Melee icons for all units.
- Improved Hall of Fame (accuracy panel).
- New script command playSound to play sound files from mods
- Savage XR can be built as native 64bit binaries
- More robust sound subsystem initialization
- Dynamic loadout presets which remember the items you last used.
- Experimental VOIP support (currently disabled due to crashing, will be fixed soon).
- New file I/O subsystem
- New story board, introducing the player to the Savage world.
- Spectating players even when they're in loadout.

Bug Fixes
- Fixed Editor crashing all the time.
- Fixed crash with loading demo and reloading the GUI.
- Fixed Sliders-GUI. (Bug #311)
- Fixed player_kills & player_deaths, they no longer update while spectating.
- Fixed sound device selection.
- Fixed Linux sound to default to ALSA
- Fixed translucency (Bug #307)
- Fixed minimap lagging
- Fixed autoupdater memory and connectivity errors.

How do I get Savage XR Release Candidate 3?
If you already have Savage XR installed, the Auto-Updater will take care of updating your client to RC3. If you haven't installed Savage XR yet you can get it from our download section (http://www.newerth.com/?id=downloads&op=displayDownloads&category=1).

If you experience any issues with the Auto Updater please uninstall your current copy of Savage XR and download and install a fresh copy of RC3 as these installers fix several issues with the old RC2 autoupdater.

How do I use the new HUD features? (ingame interface)

1. Changing HUDs (Heads-Up Display = the bars, values and indicators in FPS mode)
Go to Options/System/Game/Game/Ingame FPS HUD interface skin and select one of the 4 available HUDs:
- Hi-Res (the brand new high-detail, high resolution graphical HUD)
- Arcade (video game style HUD with high contrast and large fonts)
- Smoke (low profile HUD, maximizing play area, everything moved down)
- Legacy (the old Savage HUD, exactly like it was on previous versions)
You can also adjust the transparency (HUD Alpha) for the Arcade and Smoke HUD elements backgrounds.

2. I can't get used to the right side HP bar, what do i do?
Enable the Options/System/Game/Game/Left Side HP Bar setting. It will move the HP bar to the left, for all the new HUDs (Hi-Res, Arcade and Smoke). But remember, Hi-Res HUD is designed to offer the gamer faster info, done by looking only to one side of the screen, not pendulating between left and right margins. Also, the Legacy HUD has the HP bar fixed on the left side of the screen, just like SFE.

3. What's the colored circle around the crosshair?
To further speed up HUD feedback, the 3 important bars (HP, Stamina and Ammo/Mana) are displayed around the Crosshair. You can disable it by setting Options/Game/Crosshair/Crosshair Info Mode to None, or change it between modes (Ring, Numbers, Vertical, Horizontal or Mixed bars). You can also change its transparency from the next dropdown menu, Crosshair Info Alpha.

4. Other new features
- You can now select between a collection of 36 different crosshairs (Options/Game/Crosshair/Choose Crosshair).
- Alpha and Size parameters are now independently adjustable for both Crosshair icon and background.
- If you want more free screen real estate in duel modes, make sure Options/Game/Game/Hide TOP in Duels option is enabled.
- Different modes for displaying FPS (Instant, Average, Server FPS, Instant+Average, Instant+Server, all of them)

In the tutorial, at one point you spelled garrison like this - garrisson.

Minimap won't resize either.

The tutorial is really nice, but I don't think it's an good idea to start of with explaining specific tech like relocater....you might better start with explaining basic things of the game, like that there are 3 tiers and higher units are better than small ones.

If I never played this game before, I would use nomad with coil and relocater now, and I would have no idea when to use the relocater (It's not easy for a new player to use a relocater in battle at the right moment) nor I would move while using coil (you should tell at least that it's necessary to move with coil, cause the sniper doesn't have only 1 shot)...

This morning I had same crashes like you when I tried to connect with the server, but now with RC3 all work fine.

Btw, I can't open "Tutorial". Just heard sound when I press "tutorial" button.

P.S. Really good job guys!  :-)

You might have to get your Firewall to unblock sav. It triggers a Block window for me each time i run the tutorial on a fresh install, and sometimes it crashes cuz of that.

Title: Re: Savage: XR 1.0 RC3 Released!
Post by: DeoX on December 25, 2009, 01:03:58 pm
I'm sure it's not the firewall that causes crashes.

Anyway... I'm downloading a fresh copy of rc3 right now.

Ok under ubuntu 64 karmic, after update there is no sound. You need to download the installer then it's working fine.

just make the installer executable (right click on icon > permissions> check the checkbox)

Game will be installed in :
/usr/local/savage-xr/

You should have shortcuts:
/home/blake/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/savage.sh.desktop
/home/blake/Desktop/savage-xr-desktop.desktop
/home/blake/.gnome/apps/savage-xr-program.desktop

But for some reason i can't see any of it , for example im french so it shouldnt be :
 /home/blake/Desktop/savage-xr-desktop.desktop
for me but : /home/blake/Bureau/savage-xr-desktop.desktop.

so  i just delete all these shortcuts and put : gksu sh /usr/local/savage-xr/savage.sh in a new one.
gksu is cause i installed it as a root , but maybe u can intal it as simple user,  i still didnt check, as i had some sound issue with th update i tried as root first to see if it's working (it is:).

Nice job to developper , tutorial is very nice! i like the music too :)

The Hunterz (TH) Clan supports this grand achievement in Savage history.  I believe this game may be one of the only multiplayer games to ever have a community-movement become such a successful process that actual fan-made patches and totally improved gameplay updates are now being released into the world.

It's quite inspiring to see how much effort and dedication so many people in this community have for the game.  Savage XR is definitely going to be a page-turner once advertising finally begins.  I can't even imagine what kind of reviews and media coverage this project might get from gaming websites and blogs.  (Hopefully they'll be good ones xD)

Great work guys.  Loved the video by the way.  Going to post that on the TH Forums.  Seriously, isn't that how people should play in-game?  Did you see those clips of hordes of scavs and nomads attacking/defending?  THAT is how you play as a group/team.  Screw all that lonewolf crap.  That video shows how it's done.  ;)

(To all you lonewolfs: I'm just kidding there. ;)  Still, would be nice to have more people playing like in that video in public servers eh? Hehe)

We'll be pushing our members over at TH (Including myself) to switch over to Savage: XR over the next while.  Hopefully we won't have to use a stick.  Heh.

With all the new server tricks XR brought, like the new private vote which can be used to make the comms aware of what the team suggests (backwards compatible with SFE thanks to Irwin!), Groen should move his servers to XR asap :).

VoIP = Voice over IP

It means you're able to speak with other people over the internet, from ingame, in a similar way with TeamSpeak, PicoPhone etc. Other games like HoN have ingame voice chat also.

Yeah, you push a button and talk either to everyone, to your team or to your squad via microphone.

[...]
I would love to see a solo mode. Maybe different maps played in a paticular order, with a story teller saying some words before each maps starts, a screen showing a location and progress on a  "world map" before each maps starts and maybe better opponents on every map (or more gold / starting buildings for enemys). The game Majesty has quite a nice single player map to see the progress, you can even unlock maps be finishing other maps. This could help this game to become more popular... And it would be much work to do. The open pandora  community is devoloping games too. Maybe they want to help you if you can play it on the pandora.

That is actually a pretty clean idea there rohezal.  It doesn't have to be too complex, and the process you described sounds fairly simple enough to create (Though I'm have no right to say whether it can be done or not for sure).  However I think it's a sound idea; It will provide another medium for Savage XR to be played/advertised on, and in return that might draw on more fans and players.  Handheld gaming is quite a huge market (iphone apps anyone?) and creating a simple 'solo' mode with a story that fits in with the bigger story of Savage 1 would be an entertaining way to pass the time whenever you've got your handheld around.  Given the customization features Savage has already showcased over the years, it might even be possible to make the 'solo' mode for Savage on the handheld even more popular by introducing a function to create your own maps with self-contained stories.  Has anyone played "Little Big Planet"?  If you have, then you know one of the most successful things about that game is the sheer number of user-created maps for the game -- it's one of the most fun parts of the game to play other people's maps that have self-contained storylines/plots.  Savage already has the capacity to create your own maps, so tacking on a feature that allows you to further customize a small description for each map a player makes could be a long-term investment in player interest in the 'solo handheld' mode for Savage.

Then again however, Savage XR is already a massive project of it's own, and this idea might just be too far down the road to discuss anything concrete about.  Still, it's a nice idea that sounds good as far as I can tell rohezal, perhaps keep that in mind and bring it back up once the official 'stable' version of Savage XR is released -- your idea might stand better chances once the main overhaul of Savage XR is finished.  ^^

Lol, TV only runs at 25 - 60 fps, depending on a) how boring you are and b) where you live in the world.

Turn off grass, for a start, turn down other gfx, or wait for XR to be properly optimised and then let's talk about Frame Rates. ^^

Isn't the new music added in RC3 copyrighted? From what I remember, one of the tracks comes from Baldur's Gate (apocalyptic lands)... At least it's very similar and reminds me of it. Gonna ask my bro later this day.
And what about Epica? Have no clue whether they gave their old songs for free.

Just curious.

Hm, no, cut my head off! It's from Baldur's Gate. (gonna compare them soon)

EDIT:
Even found it on YouTube! It's "Attacked by Bounty Hunters". IMO you shouldn't just copy music from classical RPGs into very own XR Mod... That's not alright.

All grass is off, all gfx are on lowest settings, only thing I have turned on is armour, not even fire. When all settings are exactly the same as they were with RC2, you should still get same fps, not a massive drop.

Was talking to other players....300fps dropped to like 130fps average....

As we stated before performance will be improved for the v1.0 release in a few months. The performance issue with the mini map was fixed a long time ago but in spec mode xr draws all buildings and sensors which can hit performance a little.

Few tips on increasing the performance of savage:

Use the "Low" setting in the graphics options and put the slider for "weather quality" and "fire effect scale" as small as possible, turn off "minimap drawings", and "show fps weapon".
Use a low resolution 1024x768 is ideal the game has todo less work to upscale textures.
Use "Performance Autoadjust" in the graphics options to set minimum frame rate (fps) you want for the game (also set a limit on the minimum farclip, how far you want to see).
Turn off Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering in your graphics driver settings.
To improve performance on large servers bring down the console with or ~ and reduce the number of particles silverback can draw at one time with cl_maxactiveparticles 128 and reduce the number of beams that can be drawn with cl_maxactivebeams 64

The performance issues are important and fixes should be released as soon as they are tested and not with XR 1.0 IMO. I also don't understand why important fixes like the brightness issue on losthills and lostwinter weren't put online instantly.

I am not a Baldur's Gate player, therefore i can't simply compare memories with current music. That's why i asked you to post a link to a music/video file which you say is included in RC3.

I have listened to the 1st and 3rd of the links you've posted. None of the audio files inthere seems anywhere close to the new RC3 music. Please bear with me for a second and point me exactly to the song which you say it is included in the RC3 and also exists in Baldur's gate.

1. We've got 2 new music files in RC3: 3rd main menu music and the Storybook music. Which one do you say it's protected by copyright? You were not clear about this, as there are 4 tracks playing in RC3: 1. menu1.ogg = the orginal Savage music. 2. menu2.ogg = Loki's XR music. 3. menu3.ogg = New Main menu music. 4. "intro.ogg" = Storybook music.

2. You've posted a link to an mp3 list:

1. Michael Hoenig - The Ruins Of Ulcaster mp3
2. Michael Hoenig - End Of The Quest mp3
3. Michael Hoenig - Setting The Stage mp3
4. Michael Hoenig - City Gates mp3
5. Michael Hoenig - Streets Of The City mp3
6. Michael Hoenig - Romance I mp3
7. Michael Hoenig - Dragon Encounter mp3
8. Michael Hoenig - The Friendly Arms Inn mp3
9. Michael Hoenig - Safe In Beregost mp3
10. Michael Hoenig - The Asylum mp3
11. Michael Hoenig - Romance II mp3
12. Michael Hoenig - Shadow Battle mp3
13. Michael Hoenig - Taverns mp3
14. Michael Hoenig - mp3
15. Michael Hoenig - Entering Baldur's Gate mp3
16. Michael Hoenig - Murky Dungeons mp3
17. Michael Hoenig - The Gibberling Horde mp3
18. Michael Hoenig - Attacked By Assassins mp3
19. Michael Hoenig - Candlekeep mp3
20. Michael Hoenig - Bandit Melee mp3

Could you please point out the one/ones that you've noticed as being included in RC3?

Thanks a lot for pointing out your observation. We'll sure remove it after making sure it's one of the copyrighted tracks.

Also, i'll bite:

The performance issue with the mini map was fixed a long time ago but in spec mode xr draws all buildings and sensors which can hit performance a little.

Yes it was fixed, but now it eats 50+ fps even with not much stuff drawn. SFE draws "all buildings and sensors" as well, however only takes about 4 fps.

Few tips on increasing the performance of savage:

fire effect scale" as small as possible

Doesn't affect anything

turn off "minimap drawings" and "show fps weapon".

Minimap drawing didnt have effect on performance in SFE, same with fps weapon.

Use a low resolution 1024x768 is ideal the game has todo less work to upscale textures.

Most people use LCD which makes anything but native resolution very uncomfortable. Game downscales textures, that's why they're made with mipmaps.

Use "Performance Autoadjust" in the graphics options to set minimum frame rate (fps) you want for the game (also set a limit on the minimum farclip, how far you want to see).

"Performance Autoadjust" is a very buggy SEP feature, which I believe wasn't improved since.

To improve performance on large servers bring down the console with or ~ and reduce the number of particles silverback can draw at one time with cl_maxactiveparticles 128 and reduce the number of beams that can be drawn with cl_maxactivebeams 64

The game will never reach 64 beams (that's flux/surge beams and stuff), and 128 particles will harm looks a lot. Also i'd rather change particles allowed per frame (cl_maxparticleAllocsPerFrame).

Frames rates are variable. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method)

Fire effect scale reduces the number of sprites used to generate fire effects.

Rendering minimap drawings is compute intensive when the commander actually draws on the map.

Unavoidable. Not all the textures have mips.

I see no bugs with Performance autoadjust does exactly what it says, scales back farclip to increase frame rate.

Reducing max active beams stops unnecessary iteration, reducing any graphical setting to increase performance affects looks, setting a limit on particles per frame reduces high latency frames but with a low total limit it has little impact.

No, you look in a wrong folder. If you say there are only 2 new songs, I'm pretty surprised. After an update via autoupdate program I have found new music in the music folder (in which there's interface folder with menu music), such as:

As you can see, the date of modification shows that it was supplied along with autoupdater update.

Hi Guys! How fitting for me to post the hundreth reply!  :-D
Taking a 5mins break to say hello from Japan.

Sorry for being out of touch for last 3-4weeks, but I am just way too busy out here to afford any dev time on XR.
I will come back home to UK at end of January, but there is more bad news: I am going out to Nagoya again in March, this time for 12 months...

So there will be little improvements to the XR engine from now on, unless you guys get Django into a coding frenzy!
This means no new features for XR 1.0, just bug fixing (I can do a little of that I think).

It also means no beast tutorial, unless someone deciphers the triggers in the existing legion tutorial, and teams up with Mefix to make one.

PS: Regarding new musics, I got them for CoNmod (a very old Savage Mod), and never thought of checking the ID3 Tags, my bad  ... Daemon, please go ahead with modifying this.
But the defeat music can still be used though, it comes from a free music site that allows non-commercial use.

Great work, i like it.
Tutorials are funny, how much work did they take?

Resizeing minimaps dont work anymore on any HUD.

Once the minimap issues are settled, there will be a few modes available for alternative minimap sizes.

So, are you going to remove that "corrupted" music soon? You shouldn't wait so long.
I think quick fix is not a problem for you.

I don't know if i told that before but here i go:

I can't upload any clan icon, thats not a XR bug because i can't upload with sfe too.

Yes i know how clans icons should look like, and now i dont do anything wrong. I just take icons from newerth, download them and try to upload them. Other players told me i should try change format or resize them, i tried both. Still i wasnt able to upload neither with xr or sfe.

It keeps telling me "Uploading to server please wait ..."

It seems that some players still can upload icons, so don't wonder if you can upload and belive me i can't and others also can't.

Any help/suggestions?

By popular request, I've added the option to move the HP bar to the left side of the screen, in a SFE-like position, for Hi-Res HUD also.

(Enable the Options/System/Game/Game/Left Side HP Bar setting)

Hopefully now that people can put the health bar were they want they'll be content with the Hi-Res HUD (Yeh Right!) Anyway nice work :)

Once the minimap issues are settled, there will be a few modes available for alternative minimap sizes.

Could you send a PM with a list of those issues?
I will keep it as memo, to fix when I am back home in 2 weeks.

list of issues:

1. FPS DROP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1  :x :x

btw: private mod forums are visible and all I can say is: the last thing this game needs are mods.

I can't fix the minimap issues or FPS or the other things Sav needs. But i can mod to some extent. and because i don't pretend to be the guardian of the absolute truth, (forcing my view on everybody/mainstream savage), when i wanna see some gameplay changes happening, i'm just gonna present them as what they are: mods.

As Some have already said: Rc3 FPS are so bad that it cannot be played on my laptop anymore. What was so hugely changed that my fps went down from 100+ to 30 on certain maps(f.e. choke, when looking at human base through mountains.) Not nice at all. No changes Rmod or not. The same FPS, not playable at what I want.

Rc2 was so fine until update, I wish I could go back to RC2 and play with it, because for me it was pretty much more better than RC3. If there is a possibility how to switch back, tell me, because I have to play SFE for now... :(

I would suggest to fix FPS problems, and for those who don't witness fps changes, why RC2 worked so good on my laptop than RC3? Explain me this!

The only 2 things I can think of is that polygon culling for double-sided objects was improved by BiggerUniverse.
If anything, this should have improved FPS....

@XabHippA

Lololol... Thanks :D haha. That made me crack up though. I've been curious about the song just because it sounds nice, and I want to know the artist. I tried using some software to find it, but nothing comes up. Meh... but no one responded, so I figured: I'm not giving up!

Edit - Okay I noticed... the song above is DEFINITELY not what I was asking lol. I was asking this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MeIj09oe5g

It's the OP's post (first one on page 1).

It's most likely related to some ISP in Israel. I've heard this before and practically always from ppl living there.
