Hi there!

So, as posted on a previous thread - I have managed to get a version of Savage working for the Intel-based Mac OS X Systems.

Who should download this(ie: System Requirements):
Intel-Based Mac (ie: MacBook (tested), MacBook Pro(tested), Intel iMac (tested), Mac Pro(not tested)
Running Mac OS X 10.5.3 or better.

Thanks to Groentjuh, it is available for download:

Zipped Version: ftp http
DMG Version: ftp http

Q: How do I install?
A: Download using one of the links above. Drag the "Savage" application wherever you want it to live. It's installed! Drag the Installer disk to the trash to dismount. Do Not run Savage from the Disk Image.

Q: What Version of Savage will I be running?
A: SFE* No further patching will be required. Once you install, you are ready to roll!

Q: Will this work on a PPC-based Mac?
A: No. Don't even try it. (Yes, I tried it, read the first part again.)

Q: Are there any known bugs?
A: More like "quirks". But there are also fixes! Smiley
  • Quirk: Your settings are retained in the program; this means if you want to have multiple people on the same machine to play Savage for Mac, they will have to change their settings -OR- you will need a copy of Mac Savage for each person. Status: I'm working on this
  • Quirk: You must quit Savage from within the application. Do NOT use CMD-Q or File -> Quit. Won't work. Status: It's a feature. Smiley
  • Bug: Very rarely, Savage for Mac stalls on quit. You will have to "Force Quit" (CMD-Option-ESC), which will quit the Savage without a problem. Status: If I get a lot of reports of it, I'll look into it.
  • Fixed: Aiming crosshair for Ballista and Catapult fixed (If you've been playing Savage on PPC Mac, prepare to suddenly understand how people hit you with Ballista and Catapult. Smiley)
  • Fixed: Getting "Info" on players stats in game now works.
  • Fixed: Add-ons, like Stack-o-Meter can now be added.
  • Feature: You can now Switch applications while playing Savage or play in "windowed" mode. CMD-Tab (Switch Application) and CMD-Return (Toggle Window/Full Screen)

Q: Does this/Will this work with XR?
A: Beats me. I'll try and get it working when I get my hands on a copy of XR. I've contacted Django for a copy & am just waiting to hear back. I hope & suspect it will work, but no promises.

Q: Was the PPC port that Virtual Programming released really that Bad?
A: IMO, no. but the siege aiming crosshair for humans really did suck.
AA: And you didn't ask, but comparative FPS on this rocks.

That's pretty much it.

If folks have any more questions, feel free to ask, but that should pretty much do it. I'm sure folks will let me know if they have problems.

Also, again, big thanks to Groentjuh for hosting the files!

Go! Gather more Mac users to play Savage! Smiley

AWESOME JOB WRAITHE! Cheesy

I'll be trying it out now on my brother's iMac, I'll tell you how it goes.

I'll also put a link to this topic in my FAQ
(also, VPLTD released a patch for PPC Savage for siege aiming).

EDIT: It works flawlessly on the current 2.66 Ghz iMac, I was getting a constant 125 fps on high settings.
Second edit: The game has been stalling more frequently on quitting the game, I'd say every 1 out of 3 times. I have to force quit every time.

Many thanks for that!
I will try soon on my MacBook.

EDIT:
It worked wonderfully  afro  And I got high FPS!
But as cutter said, it freezes when quitting the game.

I am amazed.

Could you explain a little about how you got sfe* to work on x86 macs?

Tested this on the following systems :

15" MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz with Mac OS X 10.5.5
Mac Mini 1.83 GHz with Mac OS X 10.5.5

The game did NOT run on the Mac Mini, it quits with the following error message :

Exception raised : Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x0000000c at adress 0X00447cf9. Do you wish to debug it?

IMO this is due to the fact that Cider (the utility which was used to bundle this version for the mac) does not support the Mac Mini's builtin graphics chipset. The game most probably wont work on any white MacBook models and intel Mac Mini models.

Thought you'd like to know.

Well, previous attempts to get Savage 1 working with Cider had seemed to be using older versions of Cider (The "wrapper" a lot of companies are using to bring Windows-based games to the Mac).

So I grabbed a copy of the latest version I could find, downloaded the stock downloads off the Windows install for Savage, downloaded the SFE* patch & installed that.

I then packed up the Savage folder into the Cider application, renamed a TON of configuration files, and let'er rip: Success!

Other folks, including myself had gotten Savage to run in this environment, but it had a MAJOR bug; that Savage would "stall" when you went from warmup to actual play. You could reconnect right away, but it stunk, since if you were trying to command, your team would be without a comm for a couple seconds. That was the main bug this fixed and I'm not completely sure if it's the newer Cider or the more detailed changes to the .plist config files. Honestly I'd rather play than figure that out. Smiley

Other than that, I just packed it up, added some icons, and a readme, and voila!

Upgrading it to XR should just require upgrading the internal Savage folder, but I dunno whether XR is an upgrade like the SFE* or if you will have to run an .exe updater/patcher. Anyways, We'll find that out down the road.

Too bad about the Mini.

I'd say you're likely right about why it didn't work. I'll have to scavenge up an Intel Mini to test on.

I DO have Savage working with a MacBook using a GMA950 onboard, so I had high hopes it would work on a Mini. I'll look into it a bit more and see if I can tweak anything.

Thats odd, did you test the same version? The MacMini uses the same GMA950 chipset. The only difference i can see is that the original macbook is 32 bit, and the mac mini is 64 bit. Did you test it on 64 bit macbooks already?

There are 4 big types of macbooks :
Original Macbook : 32bit Core Duo - Intel GMA950 graphics
Core2 late 2006 and may 2007 : 64 bit - Intel GMA950 graphics
Santa Rosa and later : 64 bit - intel X3100 graphics
Unibody Macbooks : 64bit - nvidea graphics

If you have a new build, give me a yell and i'll gladly test. Its no biggie for me but i imagine other people would like to play it on their mini.

Hope this helps. Great work sofar! smiley

If it works on an iMac, it'll work on a mac Pro. Leastways, the old cider package did. As for why cmd+q doesn't work... beats me there. Most likely reason is it's quitting Cider and not the app inside then cider, which will probably confuse the hell out of it. I do believe the main reason it fails on some computers is the lack of decent graphics card. Cider doesn't agree with integrated/crap cards.

I had Savage installed on my Santa Rosa MacBook Pro but the ping is hugely high is it the old cider package? Should I try this newer one? I installed it about a year ago.

OK, I just got a new MacBook Pro, and I've found that it stalls on quit almost one out of every 3 times now.

I'll move that to the top of the bug list and see what I can do. Lemme know if you want me to grab you to test any uprated versions.

Also, I've found that I can't minimize Savage when using full screen mode.

I haven't tried on windowed mode though.
